I am a huge believer in getting outdoors as much as humanly possible. It is amazing how healingnature can be. One of my favorite things to do is to take off my shoes and go for a nature walk whether it is on the grass or sand. I recently have discovered there are huge health benefits doing this on a regular basis called earthing.
What is Earthing?
Earthing (also known as grounding) is the practice of connecting the body’s skin, usually the feet, to a conductive material such as grass, sand, or rocks.
During the normal processes of metabolism the body generates free radicals. Free radicals can cause problems such as inflammation when there are too many throughout the body. Free radicals lack sparks of energy known as electrons. One way to quell the free radicals is to eat nutrient dense foods filled with Vitamin A, C, E and polyphenols. However, what we eat is not the only way to get more of these electrons into the body (Sinatra, Dr. Stephen).
Nature walks and trips to the ocean can have positive impacts on our mental and emotional well being. It is a great outlet when stressed to go out in nature and just be.
What if there was a way to get even more out of our nature breaks and reap even more benefits? A great way to do this is by taking off your shoes and walking barefoot. I remember as a kid I hated putting on shoes. I think deep down we know we are one with nature and when we take our shoes off and connect them to the ground we intuitively feel we are gaining access to the powerful healing properties of Mother Earth.
There is a vast supply of electrons on the surface of the Earth. Modern lifestyle often separates us from such contact. Research suggests that this disconnection may be a contributor to the rise in the psychological dysfunction and unwellness.
According to health practitioner Dr. Mercola, “t is known that the Earth maintains a negative electrical potential on its surface. When you are in direct contact with the ground (walking, sitting, or lying down on the earth’s surface) the earth’s electrons are conducted to your body, bringing it to the same electrical potential as the earth.”
Earthing is also thought to protect against electromagnetic pollution from cellphones and computers. Preliminary studies show grounding can benefit by having deeper night’s sleep, lower chronic pain and stress levels, and improves recovery time after exercise. Earthing may be one of the most overlooked factors when it comes to healing.
Next time you are out in nature maybe take off your shoes and see how different you feel after just a few minutes of being barefoot. Now you have no excuses to take your shoes off and get out and enjoy the beauty of nature!
